The step from Kindergarten to Grade 1 is a big one! This program is designed to make that jump smoother. The focus of this course will be on reading and writing (based on phonics), mathematics, The Arts, and STEAM. Students will build on the skills they learned in kindergarten through activities, games, and inquiry-based projects.

This program is designed to assist students in developing and improving their English language skills through a various engaging activities. Student grade placement will be based on student’s age and English language proficiency. The organization of classes will be based on both the ages and current stage of the students. Students will develop their reading and writing skills starting with beginner students learning the basics of phonetic awareness and spelling patterns to decode words for reading and writing. More advanced students will learn to read, write and effectively communicate using simple, compound, and complex sentences. Students will improve their oral communication skills and develop confidence using English through activities such as reading aloud, role playing, songs, games and presentations.

This program will focus on the practice and development of literacy skills, especially writing. Students will practice different forms and styles of writing, including creative, descriptive and personal writing. They will also have opportunities to enhance reading comprehension and media literacy skills. This program makes use of a variety of information and learning technology tools and applications.
Putonghua Storytelling and Rhymes

This summer, students can experience the gift of learning Putonghua in the Putonghua Storytelling and Rhymes half-day summer school course. This program is activity-based and innovative while providing an engaging environment that fosters friendship and curiosity for Chinese language and culture. Students will have fun learning with curriculum-based topics and activities, including rhymes and rhythm, storytelling, plays, and more!

The Grade 2 & 3 Sports and Recreation program is a great way for students to stay active, make friends, and have fun during the summer break. Students will have the opportunity to work on their skills, teamwork, coordination, and spatial awareness by participating in a variety of fun and challenging sports and games. A highlight of the week will be The Aquatic Journey as we travel to the Island East Swimming Pool twice a week for swimming and water fun!
Summer Arts Festival – Unleash Your Inner Artist

Eligibility
All students will be enrolled in a Summer Academic Program according to their year of birth, and the grade placement reflects the coming school year.
Students taking a credit course must have completed prerequisites. Non-DSC Credit Course applicants must bring their latest transcript and/or report card to the interview to provide proof of prerequisite requirements. There is an ESL Placement Test for Non-DSC students entering the ESL credit courses.

Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues, and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways leading to careers in technology-related fields. Starting in September 2024, all students will be required to take at least one technology course as a compulsory graduation requirement.

These courses can be taken together in sequence and are part of the compulsory courses required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students will earn a half credit for each course. Civics and Citizenship is taken from July 2 - 12. Career Education is taken from July 15 -26. Civics and Citizenship explores rights and responsibilities associated with being an active citizen in a democratic society. Students will explore issues of civic importance such as healthy schools, community planning, environmental responsibility, and the influence of social media. Career Studies encourages students to develop the skills, knowledge, and habits that will allow them to be successful in life after graduation. In this course, students will make connections between their skills, interests, and values and the array of post-secondary options available to them. They will also learn about personal financial management.
